1520年 11月28日 、ポルトガルの航海者マゼランが、後に「マゼラン海峡」と命名される南米大陸南端の海峡を通過して太平洋に出た。
天候が良く平和な日が続いたため、この海をPacific Ocean(平和な・穏やかな大洋=「太平洋」)と名附けた。マゼラン自身はフィリピンで原住民に殺されたが、彼の船は初めて世界を一周して帰国し、地球が丸いことを証明した。
