I read "A Daughter of the Samurai Etsu Inagaki Sugimoto ” Etsu Sugimoto (1873〜1950) was a daugter of high rank Samurai of Nagaoka feudal lord in Niigata. She went to USA and lived there . She leaned American culrure. But she had also Samurai spirit. She became a teacher of Japanese languge and Japanese culture at the Colombia college in US. I was completely charmed by this beautifully written autobiography. I was able to see into the Japanese samurai heart of the old time. Although many of the customs mentioned are now outdated, they show the foundation that shaped and molded the Japanese people of today. I can now say that I have a much clearer understanding of the Japanese culture. Apart from what I learned of Japanese samurai spirit . I also got a glimpse of America and how we haven't changed much over the years in American attitudes. 「武士の娘 杉本鉞子」 戊辰戦争当時の徳川幕府普代大名の長岡藩家老・稲垣平助の六女である杉本鉞子（えつこ）(1873〜1950)さん自叙伝である。名前の「鉞」とは「まさかり」を意味する。 明治19年に15歳で単身上京し、23歳で結婚のために渡米。和骨董店を営んでいた夫の死後に一時は日本に帰国したが、再び二人の幼い娘達を連れて渡米。その後、日本文化について書く執筆家となり、やがてはコロンビア大学の講師にまでなった女性である。彼女が英語で執筆した“A Daughter of the Samurai （武士の娘）”はアメリカでベストセラーとなり、７ヶ国語に翻訳された。新渡戸稲造の『武士道』同様、諸外国に武士の精神について広めたこの本は鉞子の半生を綴ったもので、当初は雑誌 “Asia”で連載されていたシリーズに加筆した内容。武士道は古いという風潮が強まっていた明治期においても、侍の精神を疑うことなく守り続けていた稲垣家で厳格に育てられた鉞子の物語は、子々孫々と受け継がれてきた日本の倫理観、美意識、そして叡智に溢れている。 国際化に連れて混乱する現代にあって、私達がもう一度自らの文化について考え、これからの指針を探る時、鉞子の生き方は一筋の光のように私達のゆく道を照らしてくれるに違いない。
